Mangku Wayan Bawa was born in 1966 in the village of Batuan, Gianyar, Bali. He studied at the Indonesian College of Arts (STSI - Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia) from 1986 to 1992.

Mangku Bawa began painting in the neo-traditional Batuan style in the 1970's. In 1979 he won an award at Shankar's International Children's Competition di New Delhi for Best Painting. Since 1985 he has toured Europe many times as a dancer. As both a pianter and sculptor, he has developed a surrealistic style which is inspired by dance movements, mudras, and his meditations and duties as a priest in the village of Batuan.
